Sadnecessary, the debut album by German duo Milky Chance, is an experimental, rhythmic and rare release that is the perfect accompaniment for a chill-out session. The unique voice of Clemens (a 2014 version of Bob Marley) and the extended sections of instrumental strumming, beating and bopping create a sound you’ve never heard before; an indie reggae pop that breaks away from general classification. The title track ‘Stolen Dance’ is receiving airtime on various radio stations, one of the more upbeat entries that demonstrates vocal ability, memorable beats and lyrics that stick immediately.
While Clemens commands the album with his astounding vocal presence, the simple yet transfixing sounds of the guitar in the background make Milky Chance an instantly recognisable band. Many new bands are unable to create a sound so distinct that listeners can latch on; that’s not a problem here. Every riff, word and tune reveals meaning and a passion for music, so much so that you find yourself actually listening to lyrics to discover their story. The opening of ‘Fairytale’ is the best demonstration of the vocal and instrumental combination that appears to be a developing trademark. ‘Down by the river’ will be the next single released, already charting in Europe with an official music video, another great example of style and composition. They don’t feel the need to constantly blast the ears, preferring to gradually build towards an easy-going chorus with a background beat of simplicity and storytelling. In an ever-changing industry Sadnecessary has the ability to make a difference.
Milky Chance are different to your average new act; despite being hunted, they created their own record label and never expected fame and fortune from the music industry. After listening to Sadnecessary multiple times, I doubt they’ll be focusing on anything else from here on in.
Sadnecessary has an Australian release date set for June 20th, with no tour dates scheduled for Australia as yet. The duo will be busy making a bunch of appearances around Europe in 2014, but stayed tuned; they’re featuring alongside bands such as Metallica, Linkin Park, Fall Out Boy and The Offspring in festivals, so keep an eye out for announcements.
