Philadelphia’s Modern Baseball are a uniquely contemporary band. Calling on Say Anything’s bravado, the Front Bottoms’ tongue-in-cheek quirk and the Weakerthans’ literary misery. Their sophomore album ‘You’re Gonna Miss It All’, jammed with relate-ability and remarkable depth, will get an Australian release on June 20th via Cooking Vinyl. First single ‘Your Graduation’ will find its way onto triple j airwaves next week.
Modern Baseball’s quirky indie-emo meets snotty-pop-punk is a concoction of shared nerdy nasal and throaty punk vocals, with added high energy earworm melodies. This naturally captured the adoration of many an astute Australian punk rock aficionado in 2012, with debut album ‘Sports’.Since then, the band have quietly bubbled away in amongst Australian fans, garnering the invaluable kind of word of mouth (and internet) growth in profile that any eager touring band would be thrilled with. The band’s debut EP was self-released while the members were still in high school in 2011, meaning this is still a very young band, and making the sounds on this self-recorded album even more wondrous. ‘You’re Gonna Miss It All’ steps up Modern Baseball’s songwriting game significantly, and 2014 has seen them tour with US punk luminaries like The Wonder Years, Bayside, Man Overboard and The Hotelier.
‘You’re Gonna Miss It All’ perfectly showcases Modern Baseball’s brand of indie pop: equal parts witty and snotty and nervous. A 12 track map that deftly addresses all that familiar anxiety of growing up, being grown up, and navigating this overwhelming modern world they (and we) occupy. Put it on at a party. Ok? Ok.
