Five piece fusion band from Geelong, The Murlocs graced fans in Melbourne last Saturday at The Northcote Social Club. As apart of their national tour, the boys are in the crux of their trip as they made their way up to Sydney and Brisbane this week.
The outrageously wonderful vocals from the heavenly Ambrose Kenny Smith enlivened the audience, making it impossibly to stop dancing. Although fabulous and intriguing, the vocals were often difficult to understand, especially when the lead singers face and mouth was covered by a silicon Barack Obama mask. He gave it a good crack though! But perhaps that what makes it even more interesting, that generally no one knows what he’s singing about.
The guitarists seemed to being enjoying themselves. Dancing, hair flipping and hip shaking fun was a common expression of having a good time. The golden locks of drummer Matt Blach may have been distracting, however nothing took away from the perfectly faultless music.
The band has revived and refreshed Aussie rock’n’roll, bringing something interesting to the table thorough the use of wiry vocals and strong bluesy tropes along with aspects of folk and indie rock.
The sold out show was full of energy and all was well aside from the self proclaimed, intoxicated youngsters up the front whom felt entitled enough to jump on stage, the ultimate act of narcissism. The remaining audience stirred, dissatisfied with the pitiful display of teenage alcoholism, although generally satisfied with the talented work of The Murlocs.
