Most of you may be familiar with my writing through Culture Maddened or other features, but now I’m starting a new column: Excavated.
Local music talent often gets overlooked in favour of the international scene. Flick on the commercial radio stations and all you hear are the same artists blurting out slightly tweaked tracks. Popularity is driven by the industry, not the fans. And it’s as annoying as it is unfortunate.
So if you know someone who is an established artist, aspiring artist, or you’re an aspiring artist yourself, send me an email – Chris_Sutton@live.com.au – and we’ll organise interviews, links and information to promote your talents to the wider community.
Having already interviewed the likes of Allday and Stonefield, music producers are taking notice and made enough recent contact to warrant an article focused on the topic.
In the same vein as Triple J’s Unearthed program, Excavated aims to circulate music through the people that matter; listeners tired of what is jammed into their ears through the wasted airtime of Nova, Fox and Mix.
Feel free to also email across gig times or local artists heard in pubs/bars that you believe deserve representation. Without the promotion, these artists never stand a chance.
Don’t let talent shows such as X Factor choose your next album purchase. The judges are part of the problem.
Coming soon: Akroyd Smart, an 18 year old singer/rapper/producer from Melbourne.
