There are two types of people when it comes to eating fried chicken, chips and sauce.

There are those who carefully construct the perfect bite, making sure the sauce is evenly distributed and everything stays neatly on the plate.

Then there are the people who give up on any pretence of order almost immediately.

According to new research commissioned by Betty’s Burgers, Australia is almost evenly split between the two.

A national survey of 1,000 Australian adults found that 38% consider themselves “perfect bite” eaters, carefully measuring their sauce and keeping things neat. Meanwhile, 39% admit they end up eating in a messy fashion, either diving straight in or losing control somewhere along the way.

Another 23% sit somewhere in the middle, changing their approach depending on the day.

Betty’s Burgers has now built a new menu item around the divide.

Meet The Drizzler

The Drizzler is a new chicken meal designed to be eaten however you want, rather than being built around the traditional burger format.

It comes with hand-crumbed crispy chicken breast fillet, fries, creamy buttermilk sauce, hot honey and pickles, served share-style on a plate.

The idea is that diners can dip, drizzle and stack everything together to create their own combination.

You can also add extra crispy chicken, more hot honey, a larger serve of sauce or extra pickles if you want to take things further.

Betty’s has even given the two eating styles their own names.

The neat and measured approach is the Type A, while the maximum-sauce, maximum-mess approach is dubbed The Mukbanger.

“There’s no wrong way to eat this – that’s the whole point,” said Betty’s Head of Culinary, Jonathan Alston.

“Some people will measure every drizzle of hot honey. Others will drown it. We built The Drizzler to work either way.”

Australia’s Messiest State?

The research also found some interesting differences between states.

South Australia came out as Australia’s messiest state, with 43.9% of respondents admitting they end up messy when eating fried or saucy food.

Western Australia was at the other end of the scale, with 44.6% saying they build the “perfect bite”.

The survey also suggests our eating habits are being influenced by what we see online.

Almost half of Australians surveyed, 49%, said social media has changed the way they eat in some way, while 29% said they had ordered a menu item purely because they had seen it online.

That fits neatly with the rise of sauce-heavy food videos, mukbang content and the increasingly visual way restaurants market their food.

And apparently our table manners can have consequences too. More than a third of Australians, 37%, said table manners have played a role in judging, or being judged on, a date.

The Drizzler Is Available Now

The Drizzler is available at Betty’s Burgers restaurants nationally for a limited time.

The Drizzler for One is priced at $15.90, while the Drizzler Duo is $28.

Whether you’re carefully engineering every bite or covering the entire plate in hot honey, Betty’s is essentially giving you permission to eat it your way.

And, judging by the research, there’s a pretty good chance the person sitting opposite you will be doing it completely differently.

The research was commissioned by Betty’s Burgers among a nationally representative sample of 1,000 Australian adults in July 2026.
