Melbourne independent theatre company Theatrical Inc has unveiled the cast for its upcoming production of Bring It On The Musical, set for a strictly limited run at National Theatre St Kilda this July.
The production is a stage adaptation of the cult cheerleading film franchise, bringing its high-energy world of competitive all-star cheer to the live stage while weaving in themes of identity, rivalry, prejudice and teenage ambition.
The story follows Campbell, a champion cheerleader who is forced to transfer to rival school Jackson High, where she unexpectedly aligns with a new dance crew to take on her former team at the national championships.
A Broadway-backed creative heavyweight
The musical carries serious Broadway pedigree, with music by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Tom Kitt, alongside a book by Tony Award winner Jeff Whitty. The original Broadway production earned Tony Award nominations for Best Musical and Best Choreography in 2013.
Cast and creative direction
Following a competitive audition process involving more than 200 performers, producer Andrew Gyopar has assembled a 30-strong Australian cast blending musical theatre performers with elite-level cheer athletes.
Leading the production is Emily McDougall as Campbell, returning after her acclaimed performance as Elle Woods in Theatrical Inc’s 2025 staging of Legally Blonde.
Opposite her is Alyssa Jandayan as Danielle, the determined leader of Jackson High’s dance crew, following her recent role in School of Rock while studying full-time at Transit Dance.
The cast also features a wide ensemble of performers taking on principal and supporting roles, including Zade Nabole, Sho Tochigi, Jenna Mole, Fergus Rann, Taylor-Anne Bright, Flynn Hunter, Elle Fenelon, Cara Mia Honan, Yurina Kutsukake and Ari Rego, alongside a large ensemble of additional performers.
Bringing sport-level intensity to the stage
Executive Producer Andrew Gyopar said the production reflects Theatrical Inc’s ongoing focus on developing local talent and blending creative disciplines.
He highlighted the inclusion of competitive cheer athletes as a standout element, noting their athleticism and performance intensity bring a new physical dimension to the stage production.
Limited Melbourne season
Bring It On The Musical will run for just six performances from July 11 to July 19 at the National Theatre in St Kilda.
