Fans of absurd comedy, killer rabbits and questionable medieval decision-making have something to celebrate, with Monty Python’s Spamalot officially returning to Australia for a limited east coast season later this year.
Producer Drew Anthony Creative has announced that the Tony Award-winning musical comedy will arrive in Melbourne and Sydney across September and October, following a successful season at Perth’s Planet Royale in May.
Based on the cult 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Spamalot follows King Arthur and his loyal Knights of the Round Table on their famously ridiculous quest for the Holy Grail. Featuring a book and lyrics by Monty Python co-founder Eric Idle and music by John Du Prez and Idle, the musical has become one of the most beloved comedy productions in modern theatre.
Since debuting on Broadway in 2005, Spamalot has earned a reputation as a musical theatre favourite, collecting 14 Tony Award nominations and winning three awards, including Best Musical. Along the way it has become known for blending classic Monty Python humour with Broadway spectacle, complete with tap-dancing knights, soaring musical numbers and plenty of fourth-wall-breaking chaos.
Audiences can expect many of the show’s most memorable songs, including Find Your Grail, The Song That Goes Like This and the ever-popular Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.
The production is famously described as being “lovingly ripped off” from Monty Python and the Holy Grail and includes many of the film’s most iconic moments, from French taunters and killer rabbits to fish-slapping antics and the scene-stealing Lady of the Lake.
Speaking about the Australian return, producer Drew Anthony said he was excited to bring the show back to local audiences.
“After celebrating 20 years since the original production last year, it is a great honour to restore Monty Python’s Spamalot’s place on Australian shores for fans who have longed for its return and for new audiences to meet the Knights of the Round Table for the first time,” he said.
“I’m thrilled to bring this hilarious show to audiences at a time when we all need to look on the bright side of life.”
The season will begin at Melbourne’s Athenaeum Theatre from 16 September to 11 October before travelling to Sydney. Sydney performances will take place at the Sydney Event Centre from 15–18 October before the production moves to the Coliseum Theatre in Rooty Hill from 22–25 October.
Casting and additional creative team announcements are expected to be revealed closer to opening night.

Audiences eager to secure seats can now join the official waitlist for both the Melbourne and Sydney seasons ahead of general ticket sales later this month. Tickets for the Melbourne season go on sale on 19 June, followed by Sydney on 29 June via Ticketmaster. The production is recommended for audiences aged 12 and over.
