The quest for the Holy Grail has officially landed in Melbourne, with Monty Python’s SPAMALOT now playing at the Athenaeum Theatre.

The Tony Award-winning musical began previews this week ahead of its official opening night on Saturday 19 September, bringing its particular brand of absurdity, medieval chaos and musical theatre parody to Collins Street.

The Melbourne season has also been extended through 11 October following strong ticket sales and demand.

At the centre of the Melbourne production is Australian screen and television favourite Stephen Curry, who is taking on the role of King Arthur in his musical theatre debut.

Curry is joined by Jaz Flowers as the Lady of the Lake, marking her return to the stage after ten years, with Jamie Rolton as Arthur’s long-suffering servant Patsy.

The cast also features Nick White as the Man of Many Characters, Gareth Isaac as Sir Robin, Jesse Vasiliadis as Sir Lancelot, Noah Skape as Sir Galahad and Ethan Jones as Sir Bedevere.

A very silly quest for the Holy Grail

Based on the classic 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Spamalot follows King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table as they set off in search of the Holy Grail, with plenty of distractions along the way.

The stage musical takes the familiar Python material and turns it into a full-scale musical comedy, complete with Broadway-style vocals, tap-dancing knights, digital scenery and, naturally, flying cows.

The production features a score by John Du Prez and Eric Idle, with songs including “Find Your Grail”, “The Song That Goes Like This” and “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life”.

First staged on Broadway in 2005, Spamalot picked up 14 Tony Award nominations and three wins, including Best Musical.

This Australian production is directed and produced by Drew Anthony, with choreography from Jamie and Suzi Rolton and vocal direction by Rainer Pollard.
