The Australian Ballet is set to make history this winter, becoming the first company outside of New York to stage Justin Peck’s acclaimed Copland Dance Episodes.
The production will premiere at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre from 23 June to 2 July before travelling to the Sydney Opera House for a Sydney season in November.
Created by Tony Award-winning choreographer Justin Peck, Copland Dance Episodes is a contemporary ballet set to four works by celebrated American composer Aaron Copland. Across 22 distinct episodes, 30 dancers bring Copland’s iconic music to life through a performance that blends athleticism, precision and vibrant visual storytelling.
Known for its energy and sense of momentum, the production showcases the technical strength of The Australian Ballet while inviting audiences into a world of movement, colour and musicality.
The company’s Artistic Director, David Hallberg, described Peck as a choreographer with a unique ability to create work that feels dynamic and immediate.
Hallberg noted that audiences who enjoyed Peck’s Everywhere We Go, which debuted in Australia in 2022, will recognise a similar sense of exhilaration and joy in Copland Dance Episodes. He also highlighted the significance of presenting the work outside New York for the first time, calling it a reflection of the company’s international artistic reputation and the calibre of its dancers.
Peck is widely regarded as one of the leading choreographic voices of his generation. In addition to his role as Resident Choreographer with the New York City Ballet, he has worked across film, theatre and dance, contributing choreography to projects including West Side Story directed by Steven Spielberg and the 2023 film Maestro.
The production’s visual identity is equally impressive, featuring set designs by Choctaw-Cherokee artist Jeffrey Gibson, costumes by former New York City Ballet dancer Ellen Warren, and lighting design from Brandon Stirling Baker.
Melbourne audiences will also be witnessing a significant moment for The Australian Ballet, with Copland Dance Episodes marking the company’s final performances at the Regent Theatre before returning to the Ian Potter State Theatre.
The Melbourne season will be accompanied live by Orchestra Victoria, while performances in Sydney will feature the Opera Australia Orchestra.
